Was eligible to be drafted in 2012’s MLB Draft

Flying North?

William DuPont a graduate of Lafayette High School was drafted today by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 17th round. DuPont a shortstop/second baseman, could sign with the Blue Jays, but I would expect him to go to college where he has a scholarship to Mississippi State.

DuPont is a 6’1 175lb SS who has been a Lafayette Varsity player since coming into high school as a freshman. DuPont has seen time as a 3B at Lafayette, but he is at home in the hole between 2nd and 3rd base.

DuPont will bring pop from the left side of the plate with a slightly upper cut swing. DuPont will keep his hands inside the ball with a slightly open stands that he closes well before the pitcher has released the baseball. He has a bit of a long swing, with an extremely aggressive approach at home plate.

DuPont batted .528 as a Junior in high school with a slight dip in average this year down to .404. He had 4 homeruns this season to go along with 43 runs scored. DuPont is not the type of batter to be beat with a high velocity fastball or the offspeed curveball. He’s adjusts to pitches well, as he only struck out 11 times in 125 plate appearances this past season.

Speed around the base path is in good supply for DuPont as he listed a 6.7 60 yard dash time. Dupont had 24 stolen bases this year as a senior.

On the infield DuPont has a wide range of fielding. He can play 3B, SS, and 2B all with good results. He is very quick to the ball at any position with an arm angle that enables him to have the ball out of his glove just after receiving it. DuPont will throw in the low 80’s across the diamond at any position. He has the tools that can take him to the next level defensively already.

DuPont brings a high level of energy and swagger to the field each time he crosses the white line. Learning at the next level will only continue to help this young kid become the next possible shortstop on a major league level.
